Netflix has decided not to renew "Building the Band," the music competition series that marked the final television project of former One Direction star Liam Payne, who tragically died in October 2024. The streaming giant has reportedly opted against a second season after the show premiered to a modest reception last year .

"Building the Band" brought together 50 aspiring singers who were challenged to form groups without initially seeing one another, relying purely on vocal chemistry and compatibility. The competition culminated in a series of live performances, with the winning act receiving a global platform through Netflix and a cash prize .

The show featured a panel of esteemed judges, including Payne, who served as a mentor alongside Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean hosted the series . The episodes featuring Payne were filmed in Manchester during the summer of 2024, just months before his untimely death .

Filming for the show had wrapped and the series was complete by the time Payne died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31. Following his death, Netflix faced a difficult decision regarding whether to release the series. After consulting with Payne’s family, who gave their blessing, the streaming service proceeded with the premiere and dedicated the season to the late singer's memory .

Production insiders have stated that while there are currently no plans for a second season, Netflix executives remain proud of the show's achievements. The platform’s decision appears to have been influenced by the performance of the groups the show created, which have found success in the music industry . All four finalist groups—3quency, SZN4, Soulidified, and Midnight Til Morning—have reportedly signed record deals, released original music, and toured internationally . One of the groups, Midnight Til Morning, is scheduled to perform at the prestigious BST Hyde Park festival later this month .

Payne’s involvement in the show represented a full-circle moment for the singer, who rose to global fame after being formed into One Direction on the British version of The X Factor in 2010. In "Building the Band," he was able to mentor contestants hoping to replicate the success he experienced .

Following the news of Payne's passing, tributes poured in from his former bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Nicole Scherzinger also shared that Payne's parents were present during some of the filming and were proud of his work on the show, which helped ensure the series was released in the manner they felt best honored their son's legacy .

Despite the show's cancellation, the success of the groups it created suggests its impact will continue through their music careers. The first season of "Building the Band" remains available to stream on Netflix .
