Three Key Storylines to Watch in 2025 Hall of Fame Game: Chargers vs. Lions

The 2025 NFL preseason officially begins with the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, July 31, as the Los Angeles Chargers face off against the Detroit Lions. This game kicks off Enshrinement Week in Canton, Ohio, and will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

It’s been over five months since the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. Fans eagerly awaiting the return of football will finally see NFL action again as two playoff teams from last season take the field.

The game also celebrates the Hall of Fame induction of several legends, including wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, tight end Antonio Gates, defensive end Jared Allen, and defensive back Eric Allen. Gates’ induction adds special meaning for Chargers fans.

This is the first time since the 1990s that either team is playing in the Hall of Fame Game. The Chargers last played in 1994, the same season they reached the Super Bowl. The Lions’ last appearance came in 1991, which ended in an NFC Championship Game berth.

As both teams look to build momentum for the 2025 season, the matchup will provide valuable early reps for young players and those competing for roster spots. Each team will play four preseason games, giving them more chances to evaluate talent.

Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter highlighted how the extra game helps players trying to earn a place on the team. Rookies like defensive back Trikweze Bridges and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei are among those aiming to make an impact.

Wide receiver Brenden Rice, who appeared in three games last season, will also look to show growth. For Detroit, undrafted wideout Jackson Meeks—nephew of ex-Lion Za'Darius Smith—could be a surprise name to watch during the preseason.

For the Lions, this game is also a big moment for their new coordinators. Offensive coordinator John Morton and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard will both call plays for the first time since taking over. These roles are crucial after the departures of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.

Head coach Dan Campbell will rely on his new staff to maintain Detroit’s strong performances on both sides of the ball. The Lions ranked in the top 10 in offense and defense last season and are hoping to remain among the NFC’s top contenders.

The Chargers will be watching their new offensive rookies closely. Running back Omarion Hampton, drafted 22nd overall, is expected to play a key role, especially while starter Najee Harris recovers from an eye injury.

Second-round receiver Tre Harris and fifth-round wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith are also looking to make a strong first impression. With the Chargers’ receiving corps needing depth, these rookies could earn early playing time.

Though the result of this preseason game doesn’t affect regular-season records, it marks the beginning of the 2025 NFL journey. For both teams, it's a chance to test talent, adjust strategies, and prepare for what could be deep playoff runs.
