Canada may recognize Palestine as a state if Israel does not halt its Gaza offensive. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this stance, following France and Britain, increasing pressure on Israel.
On Wednesday, Carney expressed support for a two-state solution. He stated Canada wants a sovereign Palestine alongside Israel. If Israel continues its Gaza operations, Canada will back Palestine’s statehood at the UN in September.
Carney revealed discussions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas assured him that Palestine’s administration plans fair elections in 2026, excluding Hamas. This commitment strengthens Canada’s position on recognizing Palestine.
France and Britain have also urged Israel to stop the Gaza conflict. France’s President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognize Palestine as a state at the UN General Assembly in September.
Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment. He said Britain would support Palestine’s statehood in September if Israel does not act. Britain set conditions for Hamas, including releasing hostages and ceasing hostilities.
Hamas has rejected ceasefire terms set by Israel and the US. The group demands a permanent ceasefire from Tel Aviv before releasing Israeli hostages, accusing the US of enabling Israel’s actions.
The Gaza conflict has sparked global concern. France and Britain have criticized Israel’s aggressive tactics. Their potential recognition of Palestine aims to protect civilians and push for peace.
Canada’s stance adds to the growing international pressure on Israel. By aligning with France and Britain, Canada signals a unified call for Israel to end its military operations in Gaza.
The upcoming UN General Assembly in September will be critical. If Israel does not comply, Canada, France, and Britain may formally recognize Palestine, altering Middle East dynamics.
This development highlights the global push for a two-state solution. Canada’s pledge reflects a broader effort to promote peace and stability in the region amid ongoing tensions.
